Backsplash…drab to fab!

Woo Hoo…new backsplash! And man, it looks goood.

Austin, my husband, and I bought a new home in June 2011. We came in and put a contract on it right after the slab had been poured, so while we didn’t get to select our cabinetry (which I SO would have picked white…more on that later) or our plumbing configuration (which I definitely would have wanted a tub in the Master Bath, rather than an extra large shower), we did get to pick a lot of the finishes of our home…

our wood floors and extending them throughout the first floor

our granite

our front door

our paint colors

our carpet

etc…

One thing we knew we really wanted was a white subway tile backsplash! However, I had heard from many people not to get too crazy at the builder design center because they jack up the prices of their materials….something you can always put in later, I kept hearing.

So we waited and for almost 2 years our backsplash has looked like this:

old backsplash 1

(excuse the slash marks…this was right before starting the backsplash and that was Step 1)

and this…

old backsplash 2

We had never installed a backsplash so it was just painted drywall that was acting as a backsplash…and acting it was- because (as gross as this sounds) when you cook a lot food/grease/yuck splatters…and now it was on our walls, unable to wipe off!

So, ((ENTER OUR TRUSTED, HARD-WORKING FRIEND TODD))…

Todd Farnsworth is a saint when it comes to hard workin’, gettin-your-hands-dirty, the- Schauer’s-don’t-know-what-they’re-doing, handyman stuff! He installed our dream backsplash for us!

After much Pinterest searching, Austin and I decided on white subway tile in the herringbone pattern…and here she is:

new backsplash 1

new backsplash 4

new backsplash 3

new backsplash 2

We absolutely LOVE it….

and now we can clean the yuck off of it…imagine that!

We went with a gray grout for the backsplash to tie in with the grays in our home and our darker cabinets (which hopefully won’t stay dark for much longer because my next project is painting them WHITE!!)

Thanks, Todd!!!

Blessings,

Lauren Schauer
